What Are the Latest Happenings, Sister?!
7th Edition

We’re a tad late this month in getting out our newsletter. Okay, we’re 3 weeks late! Blame it on summer. Actually, we both have had a lot on our plates following our book tour, and have been keeping busy ever since.

How was your Magical Mini Midwest Book Tour?

It was great! We had 11 full days together and wrote about them in our daily log located at Our Midwest Tour sidebar. If you don’t have an extra hour to read the log, here’s the Cliff Notes® version:

~ We sold 90 books, gave away 5 books for promotional purposes, and persuaded retailers we met along the way to order over 60 books for their customers!

~ We had book signings at 3 bookstores, 2 were well attended.

~ We held 2 “Goals Night Out” events, which affirmed how empowering it is for women to share their dreams and goals with each other. We plan to hold more of these gatherings and if you are willing to host one, please let us know!

~ We met many new Sisters and people who are supporting our efforts, and reconnected with many friends, family members, and Sisters.

What Were Your Top 5 Book Tour Memories?

We’re glad you asked. In no particular order, Michelle’s are:

1. Being interviewed by radio host Teena Jones, of KMSR 990 AM in Dallas. We bonded so well during our 60-minute interview that I made Teena our newest Honorary Goal Sister!;

2. Walking into the Bloomington Barnes and Noble and seeing a stack of Goal Sisters and our event poster near the front door;

3. Signing books alongside Ann;

4. Walking through the open field behind Zeno’s Hotel and Restaurant with Ann as the sun set in the beautiful big Midwest sky; and

5. Spending time with my Midwest friends, family members, and Goal Sisters.

Ann’s are:

1. Being at the Bloomington Barnes and Noble and realizing "I am back here with one of my dearest friends and we are living the moment we visualized 2 years ago."

2. The nonstop experiences of reconnecting with old friends and basking in the love and support from all of them.

3. The chance to have in-person goal setting time with Michelle and share time back at Zeno's in Rolla, MO.

4. Being back with the 1st Goal Sister group at the Red Onion in Joplin. This is where we had shared news of the acceptance of our proposal with them. It was great to be back 'where it all began' for the 1st group!

5. Having the 2 Goal Sister groups together at a book-signing event in Joplin. It was great to look out and see the physical evidence of the power of this process and wonderful to have Michelle meet the 2nd Goal Sister group in person!

Goal Sister Group Success Continues

“Being a member of this Goal Sister group reminded me of the importance of the power, support, love and friendship of other women. There’s nothing like it!” – Jane

Ann has just wrapped up facilitation of her 2nd Goal Sisters group and the results were terrific! Jobs were changed, art was created, exercise time was increased, writing deadlines were met, and home environments enhanced! Seven women spent eight weeks supporting, nudging and celebrating each other’s progress and will continue to do so during monthly meetings!

“I have learned not to be overwhelmed by a project or task by breaking it down into several small obtainable goals.” Michelle

Interested in learning how a Goal Sister group can work for you? Email Ann for more information. If you’re in the Southwest Missouri area, the next group will begin on September 7th.

Anything NEW on the Horizon?

Most definitely! For starters, we’re going to change the focus of our newsletters. Until now, they’ve been more like progress reports on us writing and promoting the book. The August 2004 newsletter will be the launch of our new focus on our readers.

Here are some other things we’re cooking up:

~ To be courteous to you, our friends, family members, and Sisters, beginning with the next issue of our newsletter, only people who have subscribed will receive a newsletter. To subscribe, all you need to do is: 1) Enter your email address in the top left column of our site's What's New? page and 2) Confirm your subscription by answering the email you receive from our site. That’s it!

* If we think you like getting our newsletter and we notice that you haven’t subscribed by the time we’re ready to send out our August 2004 issue, we might help you along by doing the 1st subscription step for you. It’s still up to you to answer the email from our site in order to be officially put on the list!

~ Sowing Seeds is a new selection on our site! It lists the different ways people have helped us spread the word about Goal Sisters, as well as 5 things you can do to help us in these efforts.

~ Announcements of upcoming promotions, events, and activities are listed on our What's New? page. Don’t forget to sign up for the September conference that Ann will be leading in Branson, MO, and get information on Michelle's attendance at the upcoming Maui Writers Conference.

~ Steve Scott and Ray Michaels of MAGIC radio in Joplin, MO are working with Ann to create a Goal Sisters column on the Zimmer Radio Group Web site. Watch for it soon!

* * * * * * * * * *

That’s it for now! We intended for this newsletter to be short and sweet, but as usual we Gemini Goal Sisters have plenty to communicate. Don’t forget to let us know how you’re doing on your goals and what you think about the Goal Sister process on our Do Tell Us page.

Until our next newsletter, onward and upward!

Ann and the GS Book Featured in Better Homes and Gardens

Better Homes and Gardens February 2009

Ann and the GS book were featured in the article "Train Your Heart," by Chrystle Fiedler. Here's the excerpt:

Work Out with a Buddy. Enlist a friend who "gently nudges you in the direction you want to go," says Ann Leach, author of Goal Sisters: Live the Life You Want With a Little Help From Your Friends. Together, you set personal exercise and diet goals for the week and check in with each other to see how you're doing.

Thanks to Diana West for alerting Ann to the mention!

Hawaii Writers Conference shuts down after 17 years

(Cont'd)

The Maui/Hawaii Writers Conference was where aspiring writers went to pitch their ideas into best-seller stardom. It was always more about selling your writing than about writing itself. After all, nobody is going to pay to learn how to be a starving but brilliant artist. (I attended in 1998. I learned a lot. I didn't sell anything, but I didn't really have anything to sell.) A 10-day stay through both the conference and retreat could cost several thousand dollars, and in a bad economy, no one has money to spend on dreams.

When the event was moved from high-priced Wailea to more affordable Waikiki, it was spun as a way to reach out to more writers. A few years ago, the operation morphed into a nonprofit, and publicity stressed the educational and literacy mission of the event, though it was still mostly for people with money to pay for time slots with book agents.

Singer Norah Jones is in line to serve as a scapegoat. A fundraiser concert for HWF featuring Jones was canceled last August for lack of ticket sales. Jones' contract provided for her to keep a $50,000 deposit if the show were canceled. Tullius told ticket holders he tried unsuccessfully to get the money back and had taken a big hit when the fundraiser didn't happen.

"We have been paying our bills for the last 17 years, and we have every intention of paying back each and every person who bought tickets," he said last year.

This year, well, that's another story.
